​Topics covered are:

• How automobiles work (internal combustion and electric vehicles)
• Basic car maintenance
• Driving laws, pavement markings, signs and signals
• Getting your permit
• Operating a vehicle
• How physics affect driving
• Safe and defensive driving:
Wearing seatbelts, avoiding distracted and impaired driving, avoiding carbon monoxide poisoning
Blind spots, follow distance, merging, turning, and passing safely
Maintaining proper speed, avoiding hazards, using vehicle communication systems (horn, lights, etc.)
Driving in adverse weather conditions
Defensive driving (techniques to avoid hazards posed by other drivers)
What to expect and do when encountering law enforcement
• The driver’s exam (how to practice for and pass the exam)

Included in the course are 28 lessons with objectives, links to videos and online information and practice tests, over 300 PowerPoint slides, fill-in-the-blank notes, and assignments, some written and some driving with a parent or guardian. It also includes a Student Driver Driving Pledge, a Pre-Drive Checklist, a Safe Driving Checklist, and a Certificate of Completion.

Students will need an automobile to practice with and a parent or guardian who can accompany them while they practice. They will also need a device such as a computer, tablet, or cell phone to access the Internet and a free Google account to access the slides.

Note: this course is not a state-approved driver’s education program.
